Hello, i'm new here so i'm not sure if this has been asked so please bear with me.

Is there anyway z detection is possible in DeleD?

See I have a terrain model with varying heights and I want to place objects such as trees etc. I can do that but would I be able to just place the trees on the map (x,y) and DeleD take care of the Z heights?

Since its such a large map and many different hiehgts, moving every object into the correct z position would be extremely time consuming.

If z detection is possible, I would only have to place the trees onto the map from top-down. So yea.. is this possible?

Cheers,
Slick Wink

I think the word you're looking for is "snapping".

Hi Slick and welcome to the DeleD board Smile
A feature like what you described is not available (and I don't believe, snapping would do the trick), although I think it's an interesting idea.
Perhaps with a little thinking and brainstorming, that would be a nice little feature!
But now, you will have to move your objects manually to the correct position.

Mr. Fletcher is right, such function is not yet available. For level-editing, however, it would be very nice indeed. Adding it to our TODO list!

The biggest problem with that would be exact placement especially on an uneven surface. It is really an esthetic placement.

One thing that might help would be if objects final position was determined by placement of the axis.

In most modelers you can move the axis to where you want it. If DeleD had that feature then you could place it at the bottom where you wanted the object to interact with the ground.

Guyon: True, but even with user-controlled pivot-points you'd have some twiddling and fiddling left to do with uneven surfaces. The ability to just drop objects at any position (or clicking anywhere in the 3D view to place them) would be a very convenient start. Smile

Actually, what you'll typically do with "snap to ground" is to model trees with a bit of roots underneath the surface. If they're placed on uneven ground, parts of the root clump will show. It actually looks pretty good.

Similarly, houses have foundations, etc.

Only when the surface is very steep, do you need to do something more drastic, such as making the terrain come up to meet the object.
