quick test, trying out different ways to render snow. gave up trying to smooth everything out for render tho, but it's possible.
took twice as long to render as it did to make =o

Niiiiiice... Like I said, it's good to have you back!
The snow looks cool and I can certainly understand why you wouldn't want to use Smooth on everything. Four times as many polygons... phew...
Keep at it! |

You should use noise in your snow texture. Because that looks more like untextured surface than it does snow.
I like your bear. _________________

ok cool, i'll try that when i get back from work. could throw in a background to and maybe minimize the lightmap dimensions ( so i dont have to wait an hour.. ). |

Hah, cool scene! The bear is lovely, and I really like how you achieved the snow effect. What I like most are those 2 snowy bushes (simple, but very effective)
How did you achieve the 'beams' effect in the light on the snow (seen best at the bottom part of the screenshot)? Or is that caused by the wavy surface? (if it's a lightmapper artifact, don't tell me... )
On a different subject: one of the things on our 'could implement' list is X2 lightmapping (not too many file formats support it). For those who don't know what that is: it means that the lightmapper can also boost colors up as opposed to only toning them down, thus allowing for brighter, higher contrast images. Do you think such a feature would have been helpful to you while working on this scene? |

It was an accident actually. I think it's from the alpha curtain texture. I have a light behind it, which is most likely projecting the waves.

Yes, that would help. I rendered everything first, then took off the lightmap from the windows so they didn't have shadows and so I could get a better contrast. Boosting the brightness in that area would have helped. |
