There should be a way to convert a selection, for instance when I select verts and then change the selection to faces it should automatically select the faces between those verts..
Right now I'm having a problem flipping a few faces visible in a complex object cause I can't select those faces without selecting the whole object faces and then diselect all but those..

This should be already available. It's set to enabled by default, but check the options screen for [x] auto select when switching edit modes. Switching from vertex to polygon mode, however, will select all faces that use one of these vertices.

Well then it would select all 4 faces around it... but what if I wanted to select 6 verts covering 2 faces and then convert it to face selection mode..? then I'd have to deselect some faces.

If you had only 1 vert selected, and switched to faces, then no face would be selected, in that mode. I e, there's a difference between "inclusive" and "exclusive" modes. When converting from faces to vertices, would you include the verts on the outside? Currently, I believe if you convert back and forth, the selected set will grow each time.

Yeah, that's how I used to achive selection growth. Now we've got an extra command for that, however so it wouldn't be too bad if it worked like Adar suggests.
