I'm sure Jeroen will have more elaborate answers to this question, but the short answers would be YES and YES. The material editor will be in both lite and pro versions (as it fully replaces the old texturepack editor). You can make materials consisting only of one color or texture, or you can combine different textures and/or colors into a single material.
The purpose of multiple layers of textures in the material editor is for multi-texturing, it isn't really meant to be used as a quick-and-dirty way to create new textures. However, everyone is free to use it however he/she likes of course
I can also tell you that all this is a lot of work to implement properly, so that's why I am still coding at this hour in stead of being in bed sleeping off my newyear's eve hangover like I should |

*lol* Falling of my chair laughing doesn't really help either
(on a sidenote: I think the laughing smiley looks a bit... errr... pathetic?) |

Actually, I think most of these smilies look er... pathetic. I'd like to use another smile-pack really. |

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Now to only find some time to create and install new emoticons (have to learn how to actually install them). |

Why not just overwrite the old ones? |
