I'm trying to fill the following region but I can't seem to find a way to do that.. I keep getting an error:

I only need the exterior region filled so it will look like a donut, I tried filling with all verts selected.. I tried to fill the middle part first.. I tried to select only 4 at a time, nothing works.. why? Confused
Thanks.

it's a bit tricky but not impossible Smile

it seems that you can't fill a face if there's no adjacent face already filled

1 make a cylinder and select it

2 in vertex mode select the opposite vertice and join them

3 in edge mode select the 2 jpined segment you just done split them in 2

4 select the center point of the 2 segments and join each point to the outside ones

5 in edge mode select all the new joigned segments and split them in 2 again

6 in vertex mode join all the new vertex

7 celect the center ppoints and delete them

here's the same figure as you got (not the same proportions but for that you can adjust the points before)

now, the tricky part

8 select 4 points inside the object from a side to the center and fill them

9 selectt 4 points in the inner part and fill it !!! they must be adjacent to the part you just filled

10 delete the face you created inside

11 start filing the other parts

if you do this carefully you can do the figure you wan't it's imho related to the way deled handle faces and polys you can also use the tricky part on
same figure created by 'inset' the 2 faces but i don't know why the faces are then turned inside so you have to go inside the form and flip them manualy or you can't see them

Case_ncty way is one way. I can think of two others if you dont want to rebuild your shape, you could -
1. Select outer open edges and extrude down then scale uniformly in and them adjust points to line up with points on the inside and weld.

or 2. If you want to rebuild your shape. Before you extrude up faces, make sure you have keep original polgon ticked and flip original polygon ticked in extrude options.

Hope this helps, if answer not to clear i will explain in a bit more detail tomorrow Very Happy

Isn't easier to make a torus? Confused or just to make a cylinder, inset the two opossite polys and then extrude one of them onto the other and then erase both? Confused
EDIT: If my mic. hadn't been broken I would record a tutorial of it as the tuto that granada made Sad (which would be useful too for what you want to do and you can find it right here : http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=44 )

I was thinking about the same two ways. In the torus' way:

1) make a torus with the next properties:
- Segments: 8
- Polygons per segment: 2
- Outer radius: 10 (i.e.)
- Inner radius: 2 (i.e.)

2) select the top eight polys and extrude them up

Not harder than that. Wink

Oh thanks for all the replies, and of course for the very detailed explanations Razz
Though the reason I wanted that shape is because it's extracted from another shape for a certain reason, I wanted the edges to match exactly so I guess fik's idea should do the trick..
I wonder why I can't just use the fill tool for the outer part to get filled Confused

Thanks again Smile

Inset command follows the shape of edges Wink
