I've been attempting to remake some very old games. One is done. (part of the game)
The other game I'm going to attempt to completely remake in 3d. It was originally a "click thru" game.
What I need to know, is how would you go about making an almost exact duplicate of a terrain from just an image?

Take this image as an example

If you were making an entire island using that image, how would you go about it?

I would create a heightmap, define materials per heightlevels and interpolate between heightlevels

this of course is done with a custom application, not in DeleD sind DeleD is not supposed to be a terrain modeller, it doesn t support vertex painting and the like, maybe in the future?

That's how I made my relto island. I can apply the heightmap in torque directly, and paint from there. It's not very good tho. I ended up making parts in Deled to compensate, that's why I'm asking.
This shows the island I made using a heightmap. You can definately tell the difference between the "terrain" and the modeled mountain.

if you're goal is only to make something terrainy, you can

  • Create a low resolution grid, move the vertices roughly in their positions and smooth the terrain
  • Create a high resolution grid and add hills and valleys via the magnet tool

I'd prefer the second method. If you want a detailed terrain like the one on the screenshot, I'd start off with a grid primitive too, modify it so that it looks like it should and try to duplicate the primitive, place it next to the first one and connect both. I'd also try to change the second one a bit so they don't look too cloned.[/list]

I'll have to give both a try.
Thanks for the suggestions. Smile
