does the person with the highest rating win, or does the person with the highest average of their rating win? |

Trucker... awesome, these new lounge chairs rock!
Noah... the golden/yellow stars in the gallery represent the average vote. That's what will be used to determine the final winner. |

I'm in....nobody seems to be doing outer space yet so i'm going to give that a shot! And umm...not trying to sound dumb or anything, just a question but what if you enter your entry last second and give yourself a 5 star rating...then your bound to win aren't you? lol....just wondering about that |

Meinem: Good point, but
(a) Voting will continue after the deadline closes and
(b) We'll do statistical analysis on the votes, if there is too much variance in the number of ratings we'll somehow correct for that. We've got some tricks up our sleeves, no worries! |

Why not just make a form with ALL the entries at the deadline time, and in order to vote for one, you have to vote for ALL entries. Should people be voting today, with over 2 months to go? It might put people off from even participating. _________________

I think this is a good idea. _________________ Behold! The DeleD Wiki! Please help us expanding it

I don't.
a) Having to vote for a dozen of entries at a time is a chore. I've done it at several demoparties, and it stopped people from voting.
b) I don't think there is any proof existing ratings (let's call it ratings from now on, it's just the general rating mechanism of the website) scare people from submitting their entries, especially since the ratings are not fixed. I'll take this back if someone can point out this effect in the existing literature on the social web / community building etc, or as soon as anyone comes forward and actually admits they are not going to submit because of the immediate rating. |

Well, an idea just hit me...what if someone submits a really good one now, gets lots of high ratings. Then towards the last week, someone submits something that is just as good if not better, but all those same people don't have the time to come in and vote, or don't see it, or for whatever reason don't vote because at that point of time they aren't as active two months prior, or the submission just came in too late.
That will spurr on people submitting things fast of course, but for a community as small as ours, I don't think that may be a problem anyways. Maybe for a larger community though, as one submission will inevitably be getting higher traffic if posted for 2 months opposed to a submission only posted for one week. On here there will most likely be a core of people voting for everything, which would constitute a large chunk of our active population.
Also I'd imagine the artists themselves would inevitably be giving their own submissions high ratings, so that may be a problem too... if they can do that of course |

Hey...why doesnt Paul-Jan and the other DeleD people decide who wins? Wouldn't that be 100% accurate and fair? Just wondering... |

The answer to that is simple: we like to involve the community in the decision, as opposed to being 'two guys in a dark backroom choosing who gets the money'.
What amazes me is how worried everybody gets over the voting system. In the past, we had people just yell their opinion in a thread, then we would do some magic hand-waving, and chazaaam, the winner was chosen. Of course, the current voting system isn't perfect (no public voting system ever is), but if you could trust us to do that, surely you can trust us to distill a fairly fair answer from a bunch of votes, right? Can we please focus on the creative part of the contest? |

I think that lots of people who has nothing to do (and we'll never see around the forum again..) are going to vote...or it's just me? _________________

I'm an eternal optimist. The voting system is going to work as well as, or better than the old way of "shouting" in a thread. _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.
