Is there a chamfer function, maybe offering splayed or rounded chamfers for example?
I see the bevel function, but that seems to work on corners and gives simple splays, unless I'm missing something? _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

Not sure what you mean by chamfer, but it sure sounds like a cool feature to have! Can you explain / show pictures? _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free. |

Here is a picture showing 3 basic chamfers, 2 Splayed (at an angle, that I would set) and a Quadrant Splay (rounded, I would like to set the amount of faces).
Imagine I hade a cube, and I subtract another cube in the middle, leaving a 4 sided frame and I want to round the inner edge. ATM I have to use a selection of cylinders and spheres, cutting those into opposite rounds of what I want to acheive (Hollows), then using the resulting 'Userdefined' shape to subtract from the frame. Alternatively, use a series of quadrant cut cylinders lining the edge, after cutting splayes from the edge first.
Here is an example of a door I made for a wood burning stove, using the above technique.

That's a nice feature but tricky to implement. I'd say we give it a "medium" priority. |

It sure looks like Edge Bevel to me too. I've been working on that in the past but it is tricky indeed. _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free. |

Yes that is exactly what I mean.. but without the Blender complication of things
In AutoCad I can choose the type of chamfer, from simple splay, rounded with defineable faces and even a moulding tool based upon 'path' shapes.
The way I do it at the moment is, to create the actual profile I want to cut, then subtract that from a solid prim, and use that to subtract from the useable prim. It becomes complicated when you have angles and corners. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

There is more than 1 way to 'round' the inner edge in this example. I think I know what you mean but can you explain what you want to achieve and how, with a tool like Edge Bevel such as the one Blender has? Perhaps a picture or two might help? _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free. |

In the picture of the woodburning stove above, you can see howI applied cyliners and spheres to a cube, then merged those into one object, then used that to extract from a single cube, leaving the profile I wanted.
I could have simply used the 'positive' version of the mould, but normally, doing it the way I did, should result in less facets/vertices etc. Minor misalignments can result in a less effective result, that is why a chamfer function would be more controlable. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

I've been working on Edge Bevel a little bit. I managed to implement a very basic edge bevel tool. Works pretty well for a number of cases but doesn't work on selected adjacent edges. Here's what it can do:
- Select the Bevel tool in Edge mode
- I created a cube with one edge selected
- After performing one bevel action (just drag with the mouse in 3D view), it looks like this:
- You can see it automatically selects the new edges. You can perform edge bevel on multiple selected edges (just not adjacent ones atm). After 2 bevel actions, the result is:
- When looked from above, you can clearly see what you can achieve with this new tool. Nicely rounded corners:
Let me know what you think! _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free.

This looks very good I like what you are doing here, excellent work.
Are you planning:
1) To allow the user to set the amount of faces produced, say from 1-Many, via a entry control window? This will allow repeatable functions over many differently sized objects.
2) Singular face planes, to have a angle set box, so you could say add a splay at 45, or 30 etc.. degrees?
3) To add this as a new feature as opposed to taking over the Bevel function, which some may still use (including myself)?
How will this function deal with corners when a bevel/splay is applied to an intersecting edge(s)? (Say a rounded edge intersecting with a splayed edge). _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

Great! I was allready wondering how long it'd take before you started adding functinoality again. Good to hear that you're on it.
I'd like to play with this when it's released. Possibly I can help improving this tool, and make chamfering adjacent edges possible. I can't promise anything though. |
