Another Utility model, a Dustbin this time.

It is full mapped and I've included the textures used. The handles are seperate so you can choose to use them or not.

Nice looking models.
Forgive my ignorance (going to make myself look silly here Shocked ) but what is dps format?
I have run DeleD to open the files (it looks for dmf or dxs) it doesn't seem to recognise dps, am I missing something?
.

It's a prefab file, you have to copy it into some special folder afair.

Oh .... you've lost me there Shocked

Its interesting to see someone else's models in DeleD (got the other ones open).
I notice the models are on the large size.
Is it good practice to model on the large size?
Is it an easier way of modelling?
The reason I ask is, I have been modelling on a small scale, perhaps I need to up the size a bit.
Will it make things easier?

Ist always easier to do it larger... not too large

and when your placing it in your scenery... you can make it small

DeleD has a prefab folder, which is probably:

C:\Program Files\DeleD CE\Prefabs

(unless you installed DeleD elsewhere). You should put the prefab somewhere in that folder (or subfolder). You'll see the prefab in the prefab section (scroll down in "item creation" panel). Click it and click in a viewport to create it.

Hope this helps.

The dps format is a type of zip format. It is created and unpacked by the Package Exporter/Import pluggins http://www.delgine.com/plugins/viewPluginCategory.php?catid=40&catdesc=Exporters, not disimilar to collada as it packs everything used in the model. These files include any textures I have used, hence the size. Not everyone has ZIP/RAR etc programmes, but we all have DeleD Smile

Some of the models I have given as a dmf which is a DeleD Prefab format, which you simply drop into the Prefab folder in the DeleD folder. You can use it from the Prefab Menu. Some do not include textures, as unless you have the same exact texture, named the same, and in the same folder location, it will report an error upon loading.

I make the models quite big as it is easier to build. I got fed up loading models, not being able to see them until I upscale them by a factor of 10,000. In some cases, for anyone who cannot create models like this, they can study the form easier. If you want to downsize them quickly maintaining perspective, select the model, hold down the left mouse key and the Ctrl key and move the mouse, it will scale the model uniformly without distortion.

What is also important for some people, most of the models are UV mapped. Hopefully that will give them some hints on how to orientate materials.

Using the DPS package format, allows me to include all components, which is much more difficult in DMF (Prefabs). Take the dustbin for instance, the lid, and each handle is seperate. Should you choose not to use them and save polygons, etc, or you want the lid open or closed, you can manipulate each part without much effort. A Prefab format is a merged model, making it more difficult to do this. Its main use is for fixed or complete models that do not require any alternatives.

I am still a novice at this, but like most programmes below 1 million dollars (joke) they can lack in depth manuals and tutorials. If anyone can learn anything from my attempts at producing models, then its a plus. If you just enjoy my efforts, its worth doing. Smile

The same thing used to happen with OpenFX. Load a model and spend 5 minutes trying to find it Shocked

Another mind stuffing thing was having a model that is built some 10,000 screen units off to the left, right, up or down from 0,0,0. Zooming out rarely revealed those and using the move comand to absolute 0,0,0, usually resulted in hurricane fodder. lol

Not a usual object, but useful none the less. A wooden Window Cleaners Ladder.

http://www.working.yourinside.com/Models/Ladders/WoodenWindowCleanersLadder.dps
The cloth knot at the top of the ladder is a seperate model, should you choose to delete it to save polygons/edges, it is used traditionally to prevent scratching and protect the glass, as well as keeping the ladder from slipping in use.
The textures are included in the dps format.

Just found out how to access the Prefabs …. learn something new every day Razz
Managed to freeze DeleD twice in doing so (it didn't like me deleting all the models at once).
OK with Prefabs now Smile

More Utilities, this time a Bucket.

All the components are seperated, so you can add/delete what you want. The file also includes the textures I used. All fully UV mapped. Of course, you can change textures and make it a Plastic bucket Smile

I only upload Prefabs now if they are a model that doesn't warrant any modifications apart from say texturing.
The DPS files, contain a DXS file and any textures applied, which is probably why some think the file sizes are to big.

I save all the models I create to the Prefab format and have them all stored in bespoke folders, which are growing expotentially now Smile Prefabs are very useful as they allow me to drop them into any scene without having to go through Importing models all the time, or stopping to create say light switches, stairs, windows etc.

Another for the Utilities folder. This time something we call in the UK a Wheelie Bin. Basically for our American Cousins, its a Garbage can on wheels.

http://www.working.yourinside.com/Models/Utilities/GreenWheelieBin.dps

I only found out that dps is seen as a 'zip' type file, when I try downloading it. It asks if you want to download 'somefilename.zip' as opposed to the ext dps which the file is named.

Glad you like the models, hope they come in useful. I'm filling my folders with all the things that I constantly stop and make, in the middle of projects, hopefully this will save a lot of time.
