|
|
If I put together a website for an exchange of "free" models would anyone be interested? I wouldn't be able to start on it until the summer break between semesters, but I should be able to finish it in that time. I would be willing to pay the bills for the operation of the website.
Basically you would be able to register an account on the server, fill out a form with your model information, I would review your model to make sure it wasn't spam, and then it would be uploaded to the server, with a 24 hour turn around.
In order for a person to register and download a model, they would first have to upload a model to the exchange. That should keep the content from getting stale, and make sure people don't just leach off of it.
I am willing to do this for two reasons- I need on the job experience to put in my resume, and I think DeleD and the modeling community would really benefit from this. Let me know what you think. |

Sure. Sounds like a great plan.

This should be a very small form, i guess. People could upload a DXS, DPS, ZIP or RAR, include a screenshot and give a short description. Maybe select a category. I can't think of anything more.
It would be cool if people could browse models by user, by category or by popularity and maybe give ratings. Maybe we could keep track of the number of downloads per model aswell.

That's alot of work ... I'd go for a more automatic way if I were you. Just let people upload their stuff. Once in a while, a moderator will check whether there's any spam.

That sounds like a good plan. On the other hand, we want to show non-DeleD people what DeleD is capable of. It would be good if we could present them with a number of screenshots from different models and maybe let them download a few.
I'd let the uploader decide whether he wants to give his model to anyone or only to the other uploaders.

Haha, Yeah. I created NashaUV for this reason also.
I really hope we get such a system someday. That'd probably attract new people too. |

Sorting models by category, number of downloads, etc should be no problem. I plan to use an SQL database to hold everything. |

Bit of a cheek replying, as I'm new here but this sounds like a win win situation for all.
I have yet to make anything worthy but will keep trying, perhaps by the time this is up and running I might have a model to upload

I think it's a really great idea. I think lots of people will benefit from it! Keep in mind that maintaining such website can take lots of time, especially when/if the site gets popular. Are you prepared to invest lots of time when you're done creating the site? _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free. |

Yes. Things might get kind of tight during weekends when I have finals and midterms, but other than that I should have time. Once the website is up and running for at least a month, I'll start recruiting volunteers to help me maintain it. I'm not good with people in real life, and that always makes job interviews very difficult for me. If I can point to a website that I designed and maintained then it will make getting a job a lot easier, especially given the state of the economy. That's my primary motivation for doing this, so it is an investment on my part. |

I would support this. All the models I have uploaded to the forums could be a starting point for you, if they are good enough. Would we need to agree to some notice of copyright when uploading? Or is that being done at time of registration? _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

They are good enough. You wouldn't need to agree to a copyright notice. I'm not greedy.
When you are filling out the form to upload your model(s) you will have a choice between uploading it for totally free (unrestricted use) or only non-commercial use.
I'm glad everyone is interested so far. I'll get it operational as soon as I'm done with school this semester. In the mean time, please keep offering suggestions. |

I think, i also made some models that someone else could use; and i'm willing to fill up your database, too. A good idea has to be supported, especially as you realized that this project needs maintenance. Do it! |

OK I signed up with a web service and I've started putting the website together. Should be operational in a few weeks. When it is at least in a beta stage, I'll post the URL here for it. |

Greetings Humans,
Since there's no update on this i decided to make things go faster. Click here for a preview.. I've written a small app to share models, it's still very early since i begun coding a few hours back :p
What's done:
- User Registration / Login & Logout / Security & Session Management
- Upload of Files (archives) and images (preview & thumbnail)
- Basic "Browse" function
- Basic "Detail View" function
- License System (Choose from Creative Commons or custom licenses)
What's in the forge:
- Admin/Moderation
- Download System (count downloads etc...)
- Rating system (simple thumbs up & down)
What needs to be done:
- Pagination
- Search function
- Filtering (per user, downloads, ...)
- Better Template
The app is pretty lightweight, it consists of 4 Files at 48 KB, plain HTML, PHP & MySQL.
Any sugesstions ? I left comments purposely out because i think this is more of a management question (spam etc)... anyway tell me what you think.
PS: Preview is hosted on my homeshell so it might not always be available and is updated frequently... registration is on, but you can't do much atm since i disabled file upload (security.) |

This sounds awesome, hopefully it will begin to be used and become a central place for sharing models made with DeleD.
I began sharing my models not long after this post was started by John, here http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4140&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
and here http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4188&start=0
Nothing fancy, I have provided pictures of each model and the poly, edge and vertices counts. Where possible I included a textured/mapped version, after I abandoned the prefab format and went over to the package format.
I get a healthly amount of traffic for these models, so if you need to, you maybe able to get advertising etc to financially support your site (if needed). _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

Thanks for taking it up Nocturn.
I am very sorry for not being more prompt, but I have been extremely busy at college since the beginning of last summer. It has been hell and I way over-estimated my free time (I haven't touched Deled since then). I should be able to graduate in May, and maybe I'll be able to contribute then. |
