Is there a maximum point where it's best to stop extruding a single cube, as far as textures are concerned?
I ask this because I am trying to improve my knowledge of DeleD by creating models.
I have created a model, which is a two floor house but it's all made from a single cube (extrusions).
Now that I am ready to texture it I am having problems with distortions.
Using the UV mapper is proving difficult as the views are all wrong meaning I can't move the vertices about to line it all up.
If I do manage to line one part up I end up destroying another part that I have already textured.
Am I pushing a single cube too far?
Perhaps there's a way to change the views in the UV mapper that I'm missing / not doing?
Do I need more practice with the UV mapper?
You can see a picture of the model at;

There are no limits as to how many times you can use extrude. Do note that DeleD´s UV mapping capabilities are rather limited. If you can, use NashaUV plugin for that. If you do not wish to use that plugin, perhaps you can try to regenerate all UV coordinates by going to Face mode, selecting all polygons by using CTRL-A and using the Gen. UV tool. Then see what you end up with and use the UV mapper to finetune things. _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free. |

Have you tried the Projection mapping plugin? It works if you scale the texture first, then simply use the plugin and select which axis you want the texture to project from. I have noticed, that some textures do not export well and may turn black. It maybe a OpenGL thang.. its a law unto itself.. Oh BTW, did you hear OpenGL is about to change.. they are swapping the X and Z axis over this time................................
EDIT... Is this a case of copying.. or do we both have too much time on our hands? http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4188&start=30, mine isn't UV mapped. I'm waiting on chronozphere releasing V8 of his UV mapper, a one click solution...
Extruding edges, means the face has no up, down, left, right etc and is probably 1 pixel wide. Using the Gen .UV or right click the UV viewport window and select Generate Mapping and choose say Box mapping, may give it some definition, or use scale (hold down the Ctrl while rolling the mouse during scaling, keeps perspective). _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

I have found a way to get over this but it's not the correct way.
The UV mapping seems to have gone mad on this model and I just can't get it to work.
Up to now I have been using the mapping with no problem, so I think its the model rather than me.
I'm still getting the freezing and have had to use the task manager to end the programme several times (Windows7 fault?) ... so having had to repeat tasks several times I know I'm doing them right.
The only way I have been able to bring it back is to select the distorted polygons and delete them.
Then I have selected the vertices and filled the space. This puts a new polygon in the gap and the textures work fine (no distortion).
I have had to do this for all the polygons on the top section.
At least now I can finalise the model.

And I thought my model was the bee's knees
Now that's the sort of model I'm trying to work towards, excellent work
