Ok, so I'm working on a cathedral for my city scene. I am using primarily edge extrusion similar to that of the cathedral tutorial (Best tutorial for my methods thus far, kudos), and I want to add a nice circular window in the front. I add a cylinder, I use the unite... ECK! My cathedral with the oh so utilitarian geometry now looks like a spirograph.

Is there a way to do a boolean operation on a single polygon? The way it works now it spreads all the way to outer edges of my model, cutting through everything, and not only adding 100's more polys than needed, but also making it extremely difficult for any more work to be done to the model.

If not, anyone have a method of subdividing a rectangle and making an inner circle?

Yes, I could go into Silo and do this, but I would really like to know how to do this without having to go back and forth in the future.

Perhaps you could create a circular window in an ordinary cube and replace your geometry in the cathedral with the cube by hand?

You could make your window surround using these methods.
http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4141

What I have done in the past is, to create a square polygon in the place of my openning, split all the sides by 3, then join opposite vertices to make a octagon, which I create into a openning by deleting the faces and filling in the new faces. The window frame should mask the openning.

If the opening isn't smooth enough, I split agin etc. All the connecting lines are local.

Using extract seems to add lots of connecting lines from random places. Using the creation of the poly face to the extents of your openning, should confine them at least.
