Wow, that was quick response.
Up to now i never planned to create a game. To tell the truth, while building my little world, my "Ideas for a better MMO" have lost priority -
just now i planned to write a background story and await your comments.
But the main idea was something like a MMO, where little stories need for completion, that you develop your crafting, social and (a little) fighting skills.
For an example - The Apothecarian sends you out to collect some fruit in the forrest, but before you are allowed you must help the forrester.
To fulfill his wish you have to hunt something. To do this, you must know arching. To learn this, you have to help the bow-maker.
He sends you to learn basic wood-skills at the carpenter etc.
In the moment i try to develop a system of "dependancies" for a game.
Also a user-driven economy has my interest. So there is alot to think about, before thinking about making a game. |

hi harper,
As you already know I develop in my spare time the project 'Castaway'
http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4247
Behind this, there is a whole template for designing the levels of the game
The level editor I use is (guess what...) the DeleD editor. The usage is simple:
Load the models into the editor, setup custom properties for each model and let the world go alive. You can also define game events (do you remember the lever model you sent me? It rises an event when the player touches the level).
I you are interested just let me know.
The core engine I use is the old fashioned Blitz3D but for the type of your purposes is good enough |

Hi Deledians,
until i make a decision about the engine/world-editor i will use for developing my litte world, i do things where i can trust on DeleD.
One of this is a "dungeon". All inside; no terrain needed. The biggest will be a mine - where maybe other funny places to be excavated.
Want to take a first look? Here you are:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRSZTEZEk7A
It's rough, and not very developed. More to come...
And here i show you my steps in a new continent of Meynis.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzPJNen_Z3A
It's a walkthrough of the first stage of a new continent. But it is - abandoned; thanks to Soconne.

What you have done is excellent... no doubt about that in anyones mind.
To host it into a scene manager and get it usable isn't as daunting as you are making out.
Firstly checkout Ogitor, it is a Scene Manager that is evolving using the Ogre graphics engine, it has Caelum and SkyX for realtime sky environments, Hydrax for water features. It is not at the point whereby you can drop in your content and publish to a server and go.. however, in time, this will all make sense as it will become part of a toolkit. It has page geometry for plants, trees, grass etc, page tiling for terrains and Modular Zoning, perfect for your genre of platform.
One of the least formats I am having issues with is the Ogre .mesh / .material / .skeleton formats. Everything exported, imports 100% without issue from DeleD and other programmes.
Next, checkout Vast Park. This is not a scene manager, but a Scene Descriptor, that does allow you to layout your content and publish it and begin using it. It is evolving, I'm currently working with their development team on v1.5 beta. Its speciality is with ease of use, and secure layers, along with instancing.
What is important is, both use XML. Both of these are free and open source. Both are plug-in based and you can write your own plug-ins to expand, hone the platforms to do what you want.
Both will be able to be developed to utilise the MPEG formats, that are due out next year. That will give you a bit of 'future proofing'. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

Totally awesome stuff yet again, Harper! It makes for a nice birthday present (it was my birthday yesterday ).
I do hope you keep at it. Stick with AWM's comments - there are more world editors out there than just Freeworld3D. I'm sure you will be able to use others out there. _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free. |

Happy Birthday, Jeroen!
Currently i am in contact with a group of people, who use Ogre, and i help a little with a few models. I got a mesh-viewer from them - and wow.
Never saw my buildings such brilliant. Glimpsing at Ogitor i do already for a while. Thanks again to AWM, for making me optimistic. |

Happy Birthday.... still 21?
I canot lay claim to having made these as 3D models.. but maybe I should consider a business in Virtual Reality Cakes? _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

I feel old now. Thankyou Jeroen. (my oldest is almost your age. Happy belated birthday.)
Harper, never give up on a good dream. (just ask AMW what it was like when atmosphere got shelved. shudder.)
Both videos are totally awesome. Keep your dream alive and keep looking. You will find the engine that fits you. There are tons of them out there. _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Hi folks,
after spending four weeks with testing around a dozen cheap or free engines with their editors, there is a light at the end of the tunnel: After only two days of tinkering, i get to this point:
http://www.harpersoft.de/Meynis/deled/Torque_1.wmv
Maybe with Torque i can go on. The decision is not easy - after all i would prefer an open-source-machine, but there were no editor i really like.
If i buy it, i will have a lot to convert, what has the advantage of a chance to re-design parts of my world. Tell you what's going on....
EDIT: Is here anyone using Torque?
