Hey guys, whats up. So I've been practicing my modeling quite a bit and so I tried to make my first scene. I figured I'd start with a nice little island. But you know what, a tropical island won't look good without any trees. If you guys don't remember my thread back in 09' about the tree I made well here it is: http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3714&highlight=
Yea...
ANYWAYS, that was 2 years ago, I was younger, and much less intelligent with the 3d editing software. I started making a tropical palm tree. I think it came out fairly well, but I think it is also waaaaay too high poly.
Well I exported it to prefab and then made a whole island scene. Here it is:
You can download the trees prefab and the island here:

Please tell me what you all think. _________________ I can spell DeleD BACKWARDS!

Pretty nice.
A few tips:
The gray rock ground is a bit odd. Why not use sand? It would be even better if you managed to slowly change the grass into sand. I did that once using multiple texture layers. It was quite hard, so I suggest you use multiple layers of polygons with semi-transparent vertices to get the same effect.
The tree has quite a lot of leaves. You could make less of them and then make each one a bit more detailed. Also it's looking very regular now. Nature is not like that
Apart from that, it looks quite good. Keep it up! |

I couldn't find a very good sand texture online so I just used something similar from one of the premade DeleD scenes. I'll have to try using the semi-transparent polygons to get that effect. I noticed it looked quite odd.
As for the trees I could probably make them with less leaves and with more detail but what do you mean by it looking regular? _________________ I can spell DeleD BACKWARDS!

That island looks like the scene of a fun 3d game. Like, rolling a ball up/down the hills and between the trees as fast as you can, or something like that.
Chronoz is saying the trees look repetitive (as in: they all look the same), which would not be the case in nature.
You could use textures to mimic the leaves. Lots of games do that and you end up with far fewer polygons too. _________________ Check out Figuro, our online 3D app! More powerful 3D tools for free. |

My 5 cents worth.
Try using random shades of vertice colouring, to make them less repetitive. It can give the impression of changes in the texturing, without the overheads.
Also, maybe try rotating the textures slightly on random leaves, to make them more mixed like nature.
If you use the 'Object Placer' plug-in, you can have 'randomness' settings like scale and rotations, giving a more natural look. It's an excellent plug-in.

I'm also sure, once you add lights and lightmap the scene, that will help.
Looks good for a starting point.
