Wow. Thanks AWM and tucker !
That looks exactly the sort of thing i need.
AMW, what would i need to do to get a blue glass in the panes ?
I've tried everything i can think of, (using GIMP) - colour fill with
transparency, (foreground & background) tried adding a new layer
filled with a transparent colour and much more. Would i need 2 layers
as Trucker suggested ?
If so, do you know how i can achieve that in GIMP, none of the formats
seem to be able to handle layers.
I'll keep playing around and report back, got to go and find out how
to do UV mapping (and what it is)
One problem ... i'm going to have to improve the textures etc on the
main model, cos with this new improved glass torus, they're going
to look even crappier than they already do.
Thanks all ! _________________ ------

Here you go. <-- right click, save as to download.
I got it as close to the glass color you have in your pic as I could.
What I did was take it into paint shop pro, (never could use gimp) and added a new raster layer, then flood fill, set opacity to 50 and this is what you have:

thanks Trucker !
('specially as i called you tucker !)
That looks great - it'll look even better when i suss out UV mapping ...
(Any idea why it's invisible fromo inside the torus ?)
Cheers. _________________ ------

You have to make the Torus Hollow in DeleD. Then apply the tetxure to all the polygons (assuming you have not deleted the large polygons?). This texture is no good for the extrusion trick. You have to apply the texture to both the inner and outter polygon faces, like I show in my screenshot.
With the opacity of glass textures, I prefer to use a setting of around 40. You can then add a colour map to the vertices. Checkout my Tutorial on Glass in DeleD http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4393
Gimp workflow was added by John to the thread.
UV Mapping is a method to which you arrange texture orientation, location, rotation, scale etc on the model. It is perhaps as equal to, if not more than, modelling skills.
DeleD offers some useful tools to do this, along with some plug-ins that add to your toolbox:

Doh. keep forgetting to hollow it.
What a dingbat !
I must figure out UV mapping ... it looks so easy in the tutorials
with just 6 faces...looks bloody horrible when there's 3456 polygons ... !
Cheers all. _________________ ------

Thats why I linked the plug-ins for you. Projection mapping may be what you need, but be careful not to arbitrarily apply it, as it will work on some faces, not others. Doing it by hand, I would suggest either use Nathans UV mapper (which is very worthwhile learning how to use), or maybe try creating a texture map using Unwrap (3rd party programme) first? That basically lays flat the mesh polygons, and then you can wrap your texture onto it, albeit that is basically what Nathans mapper does.
