|
|
Sorry to say that I am having great trouble getting started at all with DeleD modelling.
I created a polyline shape, which immediately created polygons within it. I am now trying to extrude the shape to turn it into a 3D object. In the help it says
Quote: |
Extrudes the selected items in 3d space by holding the left mousebutton and dragging the mouse, creating new polygons along the way. Polygons created by extruding edges don't have a texture assigned to them. |
In order to extrude the whole shape into a 3D object I obviously need to select all the polygons in it. I can only seem to be able to select one at a time by doing shift & leftmouse.
I have the edit mode on polygon mode, and the 'Extrude' function selected. Then I click on the shape in the top view, and drag the mouse with the left mousebutton down as instructed, but nothing appears. Have tried this will culling on and off, but no difference. Yet when I look at the Undo function, I seem to have extruded something, because 'Undo Extrude Polygon' is available. So whatever I have managed to extrude is not showing up at all.
What am I doing wrong? |

Use control + shfit to select more than one polygone. Or drag a box.
I just tried to extrude a polylined object. Worked fine. I made a box like shape, and extrude 4 walls up out of it. The normals were off, but that can be fixed by flipping them. |

Maybe this is where I am going wrong... my polylined object is a plane. I am trying to give it depth by extruding. Is this possible? |

And mine wasn't a plane?
When I said box, I meant 'square'.
Why don't you post some screens of what the problem is? |

Hmmm, cant upload images here... will have to find someone with webspace if I am to post it here.
But basically mine is a rectangular plane with a door shape cut out of it. I wanted to extrude it into a tunnel-like 3D shape. The plane has divided itself into several large triangular polygons.
I am wondering if my mistakes are being made by how I click and drag. I am selecting the entire plane by holding down shift and dragging a dotted line selection box all around it in the Front view. It turns white when selected. Then in either the top or side view (where the plane shows as a white straight line) I am trying to click on it and drag it out sideways to get the depth. But nothing appears or happens.
Hope this helps. |

It's perfectly possible to create a tunnel the way you want to. Here's what you can do:
- create your polyline in the TOP view
- goto Polygon mode
- press CTRL-A to select all polygons (they turn red) or use CTRL+SHIFT+click to select each individual polygon by hand
- then use the Extrude function in the FRONT or SIDE view
When extruding polygons, the new polygons are moved along their normals by default. Use CTRL to move in any direction. This explains why you didn't see any change when you extruded in the TOP view: the polygons were actually extruded but trying to move polygons created in the XZ plane along their normals in the TOP view won't actually move them because moving along their normals means movement along the Y-axis while the TOP view only supports movement in the X-Z directions. This is why you have to use Extrude in either the FRONT or SIDE views (in this particular example).
Note: when using this technique, the resulting 3D object will have invisible polygons inside itself. That's because every triangle being extruded will create multiple polygons aside it. Delete those polygons by hand if needed. Also note that with DeleD 1.3, this will all be made much easier with the upcoming CSG routines.

Thanks... it worked perfectly, but has caused another problem. The extruded object was not solid. It only has one solid side (the polyline end) the rest of it is not solid. I tried using the 'flip' command but this did not work. I also used the 'F5' command but that made no difference, only made the object shaded white. How can I fix this? |

OK I also hit another problem. I tried extruding a polyline object following the instructions above, but this time I had another cube in there as well.
When I did CTRL - A to select all polygons in the polyline, they only turned red for the time I had the keys down. When I let go of the keys the red disappeared and the cube was selected (went white). When I did CTRL - A again, it toggled back to the polyline, but this time nothing turned red.
Help! |

You probably extruded downwards which cause the new polygons to be flipped. If you move the camera inside the object, you will see that all polygons needed are actually created. To make a solid out of an extruded polyline, use the Extrude command properties (select keep & flip original polygon). Then use the Flip command (it really should work but you have to have your object selected) with "Polygons in selected objects". Note: if you extrude upwards, you won't need the Flip command. Also, this example shows that there are polygons inside the solid that should be removed manually.

That's a weird problem, I can't seem to reproduce this behaviour. It might be a bug in 1.22 (which is then solved in 1.3 ) or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Please try the instructions I gave above. If you still have troubles, you know where to find us! |

Hmm, I went inside the object, and it still did not look solid from the inside. Currently preparing some screenies so you can have a look...
Ref the other problem, it is most likely that is is me that is doing it wrong, but will wait for 1.3 and try again, to save wasting too much of your time, haha! |

OK here's what I did. As you can see the front face of the wall is missing, so it looks like a box with some diagonal planes in there. Flipping and F5 did not help solve the problem...
BTW I extruded to the left in the side view. I dont know if that makes a difference, or was the cause of the problem. |

I just created a simular wall+door using the same technique without problems in DeleD 1.22 PRO. Are you sure you have your object selected when applying the Flip command? Also, be sure to use the Extrude command properties (select keep & flip original polygon).
Note: F5 is only used for culling purposes and is not related to your situation. |
