I'm reimplementing the Weld Vertex command right now.
Question: should the Weld command work with selected vertices only? And should it always snap those selected vertices together? It seems like a logical way of doing things but I'm not sure if it is enough or not. Let me know! |

Maybe it should just snap together vertices within a certeain distance
from each other which would be an option in the preferences.

If I understand Weld Vertex correctly then in Wings I believe this is the 'collapse' function. There you select the polygon itself to collapse - it has the same effect (see example image below - highlighted topface of cube is collapsed to a point, to form a pyramid, in blue inset image)
I like the idea of selecting vertices and having a distance command better though, there sounds to me like there will be more possibilities, although I dont know what would happen if a polygon with only some of the vertices surrounding it were selected and welded. But then I only know Wings.

I personally prefer "selected vertices", but, if the vertices are close, that would work too, as it's sometimes difficult to select them. (when there are a lot in a bunch) _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Selected, and don't snap all selected to each other . Like say selecting all the middle vertices along an object you just mirrored, you want to weld them all.
The distance should be user selectable in an edit box. That's what other packages do.

Can you elaborate on your examples, Vampyre? I'm not sure I understand what you're sayin' there. |

Hi there!
I like the ideas posted in this thread here already.
I think with an Weld-Function, there should also be an Unweld-Function, which would make a vertex shared by n polygons become n vertices shared by one polygon and seperate them a bit to be able to select them afterwards.
Example:
(Before)
(After)

You loop through either all or selected vertices, and you weld them to any other that are x distance away from them.
x being whatever number you typed in that was big enought to catch any stray vertices that weren't close enough, and not large enough to weld anything you didn't want welded. |

Vampyre: thanks. I already thought that's what you were saying. Just got confused by the dialog box there..
Fletcher: I've noticed an Unweld command in Milkshape. It would be nice to have such function in DeleD too! Putting it on the todo list. |
