Because you can do whatever you want with the windows. Ask Grenada, who often posts shots of his work where he has large cascaded windows instead of split views.
Separate windows allows for whatever working environment suits you best.

Or just leave it as is, as you already have 4 split views by default.

Hmmm making this optional would be the best sollution, but i don't know how hard it is to program that (switching between windows and splitter-views).  |

| Note that hard. You just change the window style flags of the windows in-flight, using SetWindowLong(). |
