Finished up testing terrains as to max and workable terrain sizes in DeleD.
Max is about 52158 polys(26316 vertices) with a nice workable level around 13020 polys(6604 vertices). I found a glitch in the .x import which offsets the textures to the left every time so switched over to Blitz and 3ds importing which was scads faster and it read the textures correctly.
Below is an example of the 6604 vertices

Real world DEM sampled using USGS TOPO30 files, area is northern Alps as seen from Southern Germany(I think its the Shau area).
Area is 15080 meters square so don't except much detail at that scale

After a serious flogging on testing various import formats, sizes, etc. I settled on 256x256 sampling per terrain tile which gives 6604 vertices in DeleD and decided that the Blitz import worked the best with correct textures and loading speed. I based this on 70+ terrains sampled and converted.
The images I have linked to started out as 2048x2048 terrains with around 26k vertices and the finished DeleD version shows almost all of the detail of the original. Given that it took 4(+) conversions along the way, the retained detail is excellent.

Thanks for the heads up Anaconda, they were working fine.
Just got back up on a new server, and now the entire site is non accessible. Still a few bugs it seems to work out on their end(and a few butt's to kick on mine).
Edit: If anyone wants the zip file, PM me here and I will send it via email. |
