It may well be that I've just not found the function
.. but..
is there or could there be a way of finding out which textures are applied to a polygon ? - I've got the DeleD default texture applied to hidden faces and I'm trying to reduce everything to a minimum - although it only uses 50k it's 50k I'd love to be able save/reuse/recoup.
Any suggestions apart from the obvious - which is a bit of a "where do I start looking" scenario.

I am not completely sure how knowing which textures are assigned to a polygon will help you reduce the resources, but still: Good point , I don't think DeleD has anything like that... any ideas on how the functionality should ideally work? I'd personally like something like the classic 'eye dropper' functionality of most 2D art programs, but maybe it's something completely different you are thinking about?
Sidenote: if it's just about getting rid of those system-textured faces, why not try Delete... -> System Polygons (shift+del) from the context menu? |

An eyedroper tool would be great, but also if it were possible to see texture assignment from the Properties dialogue in the Scene inspector that would also be of great help.
Re : saving resources - I'd like to be able to do the following - Use proxy textures to initially texture a model - then check how each texture is being used and reduce the size of the proxies to the minimum size required to achieve the texturing effect rather than using the larger 'one size fit's all'
of the original.
Delete -> System Polygons ... so that's what that does ...
cheers Paul-Jan. |

Hmmm... interesting idea, I am curious how to best visualize multiple textures assigned to different polygons on a single object though... a combobox, a popup screen, something else? Do you know any existing implementations of this idea in other programs?
The proxy textures idea is neat. Perhaps we could add (at some point in the future) some diagnostic tool telling you the average mapping density used for each texture in the scene. If the density for a texture is high, you could replace the textures by scaled down versions.
Optimizing scenes for size is not something we have been giving too much thought yet, so input like this is most welcome! |

Cheetah 3D simply puts a little line of textured sphere icons after the object name in the Scene view. Couple that with DeleD's 'Focus on selection' and at least you'd be allowed to get to the object quickly - from there retexturing would be straightforward.
If there was a texture replace function in scene view that would be absolutely ideal.
On optimising scenes - if it were possible to see texture sizes in the material Editor that too would be incredibly helpful - + an edit button to launch a chosen texture in a predetermined Graphics editor of choice - with the apps file path set up via a preference/button in the material editor. That coupled with a 'replace all instances of the original texture with new one' would be a seriously quick and efficient material editor.

I really like the ideas presented in this thread! When we revisit the scene treeview and material editor, we'll certainly see if we can accomplish the things proposed here. |

Yeah, lots of creative input and new ideas to play with! Got something to ponder on in the 2x11hrs in the airplane. Pity the fool who'll be sitting next to me, because I'll be boring them to death elaborating about these ideas (and drawing pictures, too) |

Oh no....not psuado code and concept art...
That'll make them think twice about sitting next to You again. _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Don't worry though. It's probably his girlfriend sitting next to him, and she's already used to PJ babbling about things no sane person can understand... It's the same with my girlfriend, she just ignores my constant raving about...
Btw, did you know Einstein needed to talk to another person to shape his ideas? He was nothing on his own... |

He probably did that so he could figure out ways to explain his ideas to people |
