How's it going with the Collada exporter?
I find myself needing to go from DeleD to 3dsMax, and realize that you can't get there from here! 3dsMax doesn't have a .X file importer, nor a .MAP file importer, and those are really the two industry-common formats that DeleD exports to.
So -- this is exactly what Collada was designed to solve. If only there actually was an exporter... |

There are tons of third party export/import plugins. There is max2obj that I know of. Also, you can try using WINGS3D to get to 3DS and import that in MAX. _________________

Working on that exporter was actually half-way on my todo-list for today, I just moved it to the top because of the slight 'get to work NOW' hint I taste in that question...
To answer the actual question: development is halfway between 'project setup' and 'produces practical results'. If not too many other things (urgent DeleD bugs) turn up I should be able to finish it somewhere this week.
Slightly offtopic, I am still looking for a decent collada reference viewer that I don't need to compile first (or spend hours setting up *cough*blender*cough*), as well as non-trivial .dae example files. |

To keep you guys updated: I did not get to put as much time into the exporter as I wanted (the 1.53 release got a bit in the way), but it now has reached a status where it spits out a whole lot of XML that does very much resemble a valid Collada file. Still have a whole lot of testing to do, but it won't be long.
Granada: A great viewer indeed. Just wish it would be a little more generous in providing feedback when you feed it something it doesn't like... =D |

I'm looking forward to this COLLADA export to succeed.
If you need a Collada viewer that reports feedback on problematic Collada input (.dae files), you can use my Bullet COLLADA Physics viewer. It is part of the open source Bullet physics sdk, but you can safely ignore all physics and just compile the ColladaDemo.exe.
The viewer doesn't display fancy most graphics stuff, because the focus is on COLLADA physics features. But it imports valid Collada files by using the COLLADA-DOM, and spits out a meaningful error when the input is 'invalid' in most cases.
Download the binary or sources here (demo is called ColladaDemo, and it allows dragging files over the .exe):

If you have any COLLADA questions, you can visit the Bullet physics forums, and just send a PM to 'erwin coumans'. That can be done in either English or Dutch language.

Thanks, Erwin, that might prove to be very helpful!
The Bullet Physics SDK looks like a very interesting project, especially for those who like to learn how all this physics stuff actually works in stead of just buying one of the commercial engines and plugging it in. I'll make sure to get in touch! |
