How on earth do you move things?
I've got some walls I made:
On top view I can move the walls left / right (left and right)
but not up/down (back and forward)
On front view I can move the walls left / right (left and right)
but not up/down (up and down)
On side view I can't move the walls left / right (forwards and back)
or not up/down (up and down)
the above is with the mouse, with the keyboard (arrow keys) I can do both directions on side view and on the top / front view I can only go left / right.
So side view works as expected. I'm probably being stupid, as I'm new, any pointers? |

now I feel stupid, I had restrict to X set...
but the question remains, when restrict to X was set, why was the side view allowing me to move in both th Y and Z axis?
Cheers,

Hi there grahama and welcome to these forums!
You're experiencing the nature of the 2D views. As the name 2D view already implies, you can only move in 2 directions in 3D space when you're editing in the 2D views. The Top view, for example, allows you to move in the direction of the X-axis (left/right) and Z-axis (depth). You cannot move stuff in the direction of the Y axis (up/down; height). If you want that, use the Front view or Side view. They allow the XY-axis and ZY-axis respectively.
Rotation is another story: if you want to rotate something about the Y-axis, use the Top (XZ) view. Rotating something about the Z-axis is done in the Front (XY) view. Rotating about the X-axis is done in the Side (ZY) view. Notice a pattern here?
To summarize:
Top XZ view: movement in X and Z directions, rotation about Y-axis.
Front XY view: movement in X and Y directions, rotation about Z-axis.
Side ZY view: movement in Z and Y directions, rotation about X-axis.
If you restrict movement using the Restriction XYZ buttons, you can limit movement to allow precise movement in one direction only. For example, if you restrict yourself to X-movement, moving something in the Top view (which allows X-movement) will move it along the X-axis only, and not the Z-axis.
This is standard behaviour in a 3D modeling package and might need a bit getting used too when you're first starting out. Goodluck! |

Hi,
Thanks for the detailed response, I have used several packages before (Amapi, truSpace, milkshape3d)
I was expecting to be able, as you said, to be able to move in two directions, but could only move in one.
I then realised that I had "restrict to X" set which meant that I could only move in one (so it was me being thick).
The only thing I didn't understand was:
The restrict to X was only affecting 2 of the 3 views. I cannot reproduce this effect:
When restrict to X was set, on the side view you could move in both the Y and Z.
So to summerise with restrict to X on:
Top view CAN move X, and CANNOT move Z
Front view CAN move X and CANNOT move Y
Side View **CAN** Move Z and **CAN** Move Y (Despite Restrict To X being set, which should mean you can only move in the X axis...)
This was fixed by restarting the application, which also fixed all the CSG options being greyed out (another person has had that problem too see thread "CSG Union and Lite Version").
Seems to be behaving itself now, wish I could figure out what caused it.
How do I get "Deled Pro User" on my details over there <---- ?
Thanks,
- Anthony |

You're quite right - you should not be able to move in the Side view when X-restriction is on. If you manage to reproduce that behaviour somehow, please let me know.
The CSG commands being greyed out error will be fixed in the next release.

I just set the DeleD PRO user details for you (it's a manual change we admin's perform on each user individually). |
