In an effort to learn to use DeleD, I am folloing elementrx's tutorial, "how to create a simple house", having first read all that I could find.
All goes well untill I come to extrude the roof polygons, the tutorial reads "now go to the polygon mode and select the 2 roof polygons"
I can only manage to select one or the other sides of the roof, and if I extrude them seperatly, it leave a "V" in the centre of the roof. Can any one help.
This is what I have so far:-

yes, hold shift and control at the same time to select more than 1 polygon, vertex etc.
i'll update the tutorial... |

Thanks to you both, yes that has done the trick, but I still have the "V" between the two sides at the apex of the roof, I will have to try and devise a ridge tile of some sort.

Delete those 2 polygons, then drag the proper vertices together in the middle and weld them. _________________

you can just delete the 2 polygons in the V, then select the 2 vertices of the one roof and move them to the middle and a little higher, do the same with the other two vertices. Then weld them and the roof is complete.
OR undo your extruding and extrude again but this time make sure "extrude be region" is selected at the right bottem of the screen.
EDIT: ah daaark was a little faster but i think if you build other things the "extrude by region" is better and faster. |

Again, my thanks to all, unfortunately I'm still not achieving, I'm going to give it a rest and (hopefuly) come back with a clearer brain (or cauliflower)
I have got "extrude by region" ticked, but it is still not performing. _________________ Bob |

ahh i think i know what the problem is: the upper polygon of the box you turned into the roof is still there and it's now very very small. when i wrote the tutorial i also didn't knew anything of that feature but here is how you can solve it:
go to vertex mode, then go to selection at the top of the screen- select all. now are the vertices should be orange, then click on "weld" and make sure that the distance in the right bottem is set to 2. now press ok and you should see 4 vertices welded. then extrude your roof with "extrude by region" selected.
edit: i'll also update the tutorial
edit:edit: updated the tutorial.
hope it works |

The easiest way is what elementrix proposed. Go back to the original (unextruded) house. Select the roof polygons. Use Extrude by Region to extrude those polygons just a bit.
Tip: use Extrude in the 3D view. Hold down the mouse and drag a bit to the right. That might help. |

It works fine, that is that stage sorted
I have to go out now, so I will continue in the morning (thats the advantage of being retired)
Thank you all, you are very patient. _________________ Bob |

Just about finished, everything else went smoothly, just need to get a decent glass texture.
Is it possible to scale textures to fit?

quote from tutorial:
Quote: |
then go back to the face mode and click on "Gen. UV - fit texture to size - ok"
now your texture has been fit to the face you selected.(if you dont want your texture like this you can move, rotate and scale it with those three buttons in the face mode. |
so just select the face's and move, rotate or scale you textures.
when you scale it the best thing to do is to do it in the 3d view because than the texture's won't get stretched.
EDIT: about the glass texture: if i'm not wrong there is a map "glass" where 3 glass texture's are that have been made by daaark. or you could set your black texture to multiply in the material editor so it become's transparant.
OR take a look here: http://mayang.com/textures/Architectural/html/Windows/index.html
cut out the window you like in a paint program and paste it on you model;) |
