A lot of my objects in my scenes don't really benefit much from lightmapping, because they don't receive shadows (or don't need too), and just need to be shaded properly. So vertex colors would be a nice override mode. This would help a lot on high poly objects which only end up wasting thousands of little lightmaps for nothing.
Also, Add View->Lightmap only. Render everything with it's vertex colors, and then only the lightmap on top if it has any. _________________
