There is a free 3D procedural tree creator at
http://dryad.stanford.edu/
It can save it .OBJ format, but for the test tree I created the file was 17Meg, so I'm not sure how much use they will be.
Still someone might be able to make use it.

Yeah, someone over at MV found this a bit ago, just the trunk can be huge (as like the 17 megs), but I've gotten full leafy trees to be over 92 mb in an .obj file. It's not ideal for games to say the least, and I ran out of memory just trying to import it into DeleD (I think I got just the trunk into 3ds). For every leaf they use geometry...
You can create some cool trees though, and one of the creators found our thread over at multiverse and remarked how they may be working on a feature that would make it more game-friendly. |

Load them into a free program called Mesh Lab and reduce them. |

Works well...FYI I applied the remove duplicate vertices filter. Then remeshed it using Loop Subdivsion Surfaces. That got it down to 5Meg. Then just applied the Quadratic Edge Collaspe Decimation to get it down to a reasonable number of vertices.
The Clustering Decimation fillter could also be used. Another nice tool |

There is a 1 click polygon reduction command in there. You can just type the amount of polygons you want, and the reducer will do the work for you. |

That's what you do with the Quadratic Edge Collapse.
