Doesn't matter if I mark that checkbox in the lightmapper or not, all objects in the scene get lightmapped.. |

That's not what it does. That switch is something from the old das before the material system had the options. It was wether or no non selected objects would cast shadows, but you can do that manually now with both object property overrides and material system overrides. (I wish you could stop an object from being lightmapped completely in those object overrides).
Also, if you just want to lightmap your selection, it's in the menu at the top. I forget the shortcut key. |

While you are working on your lightmap, you frequently only want to regenerate the lightmap for the part of the map you are working on.
So what you do, is select your little corner of the scene, and hit CTRL-L: Lightmap selection only. Much much faster then relighting all of the scene.
Now while you are doing that, you might or might want all the other objects in the scene to cast shadows on your little corner (which takes a little extra calculation time). That's what that option is for.
The object/material settings accomplish the same, but are of a much ore persistent nature.
After you're done, you lightmap all of the scene (CTRL+ALT+L)
DaarK: Request noted. Internally, lightmap texture are handled per-material base, so such an option didn't seem too straightforward, but as a user it makes perfect sense, you just want a quick way to turn it off. |
