How do I make an object longer/wider etc?

How do you stretch only the one side of an object? I mean, if I made a pillar that's too short and I want to make it little bit longer. But there is only the Scale button, which scales the whole object and that's something I definitely don't want? I cannot figure it out..

go into vertex mode, select the 4 upper vertices of the pillar, and move them up.
