Absolutely, 3DS is still very popular, made so by 3DMax... but their prefered format now is .max

Emerging and rapidly being adopted formats are .X , .dae (Collada) and formats like OBJ have stood the test of time as being robust and still supported by over 99% of 3D modelling programmes.

If there is an advantage for 3DS, it would possibly be file size.
