|
|
Okay, i'm modelling a town and im trying to use subract to make the road of the city set down a little bit. So i have a large cube overlapping the road that im using to subtract. This works out mostly fine, except for in some spots it doesnt indent but just leaves a hole in the model that is not filled in. Help?
thanks |

Do you have any pictures to show what you are talking about I've never run into this problem. (and I use csg subtraction all the time) _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Heres a picture of the city with the shape im subtracting to give the road an indent:
And this is what happens:
It works in some spots but in others there is an ugly hole through the model, and I don't know why. I tried optimizing my model but that led to holes in different spots of the road. |

Ok. I've tried to replicate what you've done, but keep comming out with the desired results instead of what you have been getting.
There are several things I can think of that may cause what you are seeing, but we need more information on how you made your model, and how you made the subtracting part to know for sure.
#1. Is the road model 1 big model? or is it several road peices?
#2. The part you are subtracting, is it a clone of the first peice? or did you model it seperately?
What it looks like to me is that it's all 1 model with the subtracting part a clone. That could possibly throw off the routines. Also, your lines aren't straight. Could the bottom of the areas where you are getting a complete cut thru be really shallow? or is your subtracting part actually cutting thru your model? _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

With problems like this, it's almost always bad geometry. Try welding all vertices with a distance close to zero and make sure the disappeared polys are in correct orientation (disable face culling to do this) |

okay, i tried fixing up my geomety, welding the vertices, and optimizing my model, but then i get strange holes in other parts of my road im trying to make.
And to answer your questions trucker:
1. The road is one big model and seperate from my city model
2. The part im subtracting i modelled seperately
And sorry for the pictures, i realize my grid line isnt accurate because i just converted to deled 2.3 so it messed up the grid size. |

No problem.
Something to try. Break up your road into sections and try subtracting that way. The routines may be getting broken with so many curves. I don't know for certain tho. _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Hey, i tried to do it in small segments, tried anything i could but nothing works, so i think i will scrap this project even though it took me quite a while. Thanks anyways |

ok, this wierd, I had similar issue today, after reading this thread and like 2 hours headaches!!!
Try optimizing the model and the object your using to cut and then using subtract.
what is odd with old versions you did not have to do this. anyways it allowed it to work for me. |

I bet it could get it to work on light with other ways if you want? I could be wrong with what you want, but I think it could get it to work. |
