Yes they are, I used them several times when I still was using DeleD. It's useful when you have bigger irregular geometry and you dont want to work on a vertex basis. When I was working on the zombies, the torso was made out of a cylinder and I would select one edge and then ring select so I could enlarge the belly, for example. Loop select might be even more useful.
I think these are crucial as they are steps away from the "here you have a polygon, now you can move its vertices and connect the edges" mentality, so you can actually work with more complex meshes than just building low poly houses. I just found them hard to use usability-wise, because the hotkeys were like 3 buttons or so and sometimes, it didnt really do anything but you couldnt tell why. _________________ Behold!
