OpenGL doesn't really define the orientation in 3d graphics applications. It's the application itsself. A programmer can choose whether Y or Z should point up, and whether X should point left or right etc... Everything can be adjusted, as long as you have a decent understanding of matrices.
There are conventions though. For example, Y points upwards in most programs. |
That is the dilemma.. you said Y point UP, so you view the platform space as being flat and Up makes it 3D? Spreadsheets appear on your screen in a flat format, in an upright format by nature of the display itself. Layers are denoted by the 'z' axis, which as you know is back and front stacking, however, spreadsheets only extend down and to the right. Charts extend up and to the right only.
In Second Life and or OpenSim platforms, Z is up, because their sims are zones that are measured by a set size from the bottom left like a chart, the Up is simply a height thing above the flat plane. However the z axis is the only one that you can apply a minus value to, unlike true 3D axis whereby you can apply minus values to all axis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system#Cartesian_coordinates_in_three_dimensions is one such coordinate system. Strange they say Z is UP.
You could confuse the matter even more by trying some of the links on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Coordinate_systems
Or you could confirm that Y is UP here http://www.siggraph.org/education/materials/HyperGraph/modeling/mod_tran/3drota.htm

I've been revamping an old world I created from scratch, it was based upon a mesh I made in DeleD, using the free version, so no magnet, all vertices's were moved one at a time by hand LOL.
Its a 'stress relief' world, whereby you get to push a physical sphere around a course. Up/Down hills, through obstacles etc. Its not 'pretty' as in most of the other worlds I've created, but people liked to use it so much, I threw in a few trees, plants etc, and re-textured it on the crude mesh.
A screen-shot for you... you can of course actually try out the world yourself, its linked to our Demo access on the website.

Now the 'Human Pinball' world has now been hosted/linked, I created a greener version, using grasses to make it less harsh.
I am now working on a 'Human Cazy Golf' themed world, here is some early examples of some of the features in the route.
This one is textured with bamboo for the structure and woven bamboo latice for the floor.
I'll probably add some scripted functionality that will maybe sound a trumpet and shout congratulations or something, when the ball goes in the hole, along with background music. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

Thanks
I've completed another 'hole' in the Crazy Golf world... This one is called 'The Bunker'. The user arrives at the entrance to the Bunker, which is buried underground. Once down the stairs their ball awaits them, they have several choices of route to reach the 'cup' at the end.
Its perhaps harder/duller to explain, than it is to actually play. Which shouldn't be long, I should finish the components by this time next week. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

I've redone the Tree Tops model, adding some Zen stuff.
This is when an old bug came to haunt me. When I began adding all the models, saved as prefabs, into the main terrain. Developing the heights, layouts, burying the Bunker, creating hills and lakes for the models, I had to close the project. When I reopened it later, this is the result:
I checked, all the other model textures had been replaced for the ones related to the last prefab I had dropped (The Tree Tops), completely undoing all my work.
What I'll have to do now is, export the models, so I can import them, and not use prefabs. However, when I export my models as OBJ's, they loose some of the textures. I'm thinking I'll use the dps format, see how that works. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

With the help of Trucker2000 (thanks again) I managed to get this world up and running. Took a few snapshots, and as always thought I would share them with you.
I have not done anything fancy with the pathways and I only have a handful of trees etc in the build. I'll add/take away to enhance the world, without detracting from its purpose... stress relief. I still have a way to go before I think its finished. So far, its a good work in practise. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.

I can imagine
The world is available now via our demo access point from our website, so you can try your hand.
I've added more foliage and played with the water etc. I don't believe the Ogre exporter takes full advantage of the Ogre material handling, so there are some alpha issues. These do not detract away from the world itself, just an annoyance to me as a builder. _________________ Politeness is priceless when received, cost nothing to own or give, yet some cannot afford.
