I know there already is a way, by selecting each vertice around a hole, then click Fill... but I've seen in other programmes that you can use the polygon face tool, and it will allow you to select a closed hole in a mesh, then click fill. It auto detects the edges/vertices. As a biproduct of that selection, you would know if the hole wasn't closed/surrounded by edges, as it would not select, saving quite a bit of time.

In some large holes, in a complicated mesh, it is all too easy to miss one vertice, especially if there are several vertices close by. Also it helps speed up the process of filling mesh holes after optimise has been a bit too zealous Smile

That would involve automatic checking for areas that can be filled. Interesting stuff, really. Here's a question for ya: how does the polygon face tool allow you to actually select a non-existing polygon? Got any screenshots perhaps?

I was using 3D Coat (it has expired now, so no screehshots). You can see a movie, it is part of a bigger tutorial, not sure now which one, they are all very, very long and show you everything in a move by move basis, movies of creating a model from start to finish.
I believe the same is available in Sculptris. As long as the hole is surrounded by connecting sides/edges, it detects the vertices and gives you a blue (in this case) outline of the hole, which you can select and click Fill. It is a specific mode/task you perform, so it doesn't just appear while you are doing something else.

LOL.. I'm trying to find the right tutorial.. here is one that similar in what it does, albeit this is a cap tool.

I found the spot in this movie http://vimeo.com/8038591 at 29:43 he mentions the Points/Faces tool.... that's the one. 36:15 is where its used even more.

I suppose it maybe possible to use an adjustable overlay to 'capture' areas where there is no polygon. However I believe it would be smarter to use edge detection.

Another feature in 3D Coat I found useful is the polygon creation tool. You select a vertice on an edge and it will detect the whole edge in the direction you move the cursor, this then creates a third vertice which you click to anchor, followed by a forth. This feature allows you to develop a mesh, or sections of meshes, on the fly. It works in a mode whereby you have your 'clay' model underneath, so it will effectively follow its contours.

The only drawback is, there is no 'clay' model underneath to perform this in 3D, it would have to be a 2D operation. However it would negate having to select all vertices placed and connect, fill.

I see this in a line with my older request(http://www.delgine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4153) where i asked for an easy way of re-arranging surfaces. But - Deled actually can do more:
When i got a poly from the "edge" of a hemisphere, i can select the 4 vertices and Deled fills them - creating a "new edge". I like that feature - because i often develop only a half of an object, for further duplicating and mirroring.
Please have deep thoughts about this - it's a way to make "reducing polys" more easy.
