Thought I'd share this with you guys. It's an implementation of a real-time atmospheric scattering effect as described by Sean O'Neill in GPU Gems 2. It's an early draft (pretty much just focused on the scattering effect), but I slapped on some cloud coverage and I gotta say it looks pretty darn awesome. The next iteration will include actual lighting (aside from the scattering), night lights on the dark side, and cloud shadows.

Finally went back to complete this effect (shelved it for a bit, but I'm including it in my engine samples):
1. Normal mapping + phong illumination (and optional specular mapping)
2. Cloud shadows (clouds also an independent layer/rotates)
3. City lights on the dark side of the planet.
Wrote up a brief overview, including a link to download the HLSL code over at my portfolio website. Includes a galore of screenshots too and a video, some of which I'll post below too. I think you can see a big difference (and an improvement) over the first images. The three images below respectively show the normal mapping, cloud shadows (kinda makes the clouds pop out in that one, they're really tweaked up high there), and city lights...ironically each effect is alone in each shot

That is simply awesome. If it's ok with you, I'd like to see if I can get this working in torque. _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Yeah, that's why I included them for download. Although, I didn't include any license - which is now remedied. All content in my engine is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license, which this would be too.
Additionally, I got my textures from:

And there's a few other places out there, I think where I got some higher resolution versions. Like NASA's site Visible earth.
So feel free. |
