Please tell me if it is possible to get a .scene file from a level modeled in DeleD... and if not directly is there at least some "tool chain" that will do the work?

Hi Douter ..

(Just looked up ogre dotscene cos i'd never heard of it ....)

I don't think deled can do it on its own, but there are several
exporter plugins freely available (here) which you can use to get your
scene into blender, and i see there's a blender plugin which
can handle the .scene files.

I believe there is some confusion here. None of the plug-ins from the link you gave, will work for Blender. They will however work, when you export from DeleD, for importing into Blender.

From my experience, the 3DS or the OBJ formats work well in that work-flow.

The DotScene format is a schema of XML, but like most things in life, not all XML is the same. You may find you loose things like terrain, lights and animations in the transition, unless you use some form of parser to reinterpret the elements of the XML.

There are a lot of talented people here, that will correct me if I'm wrong, and or, point you in the correct direction. Smile

sorry - yes that's what i meant.
You'd need to export from deled into a format that you can import
into blender (eg .obj) - don't think there's a 3DS exporter (although
there is an importer ...).

Just looking back at the export plugins page - and there is an ogre
exporter (says "DeleD Plugin that enables you to export Ogre .mesh and/or .xml files (including .material).") - doesn't mention .scene but maybe
worth a look.

I am familiar with the Ogre mesh/xml exporter, as it is my primary format that I use at present. DotScene although it is xml, is not quite the same as Ogre xml, as the Ogre xml will not forward scene objects like lights. Its material handling is also quite basic, so don't expect too much there. In order to get animations and rigged avatars, you need a .skeleton format exporter.

Think of DotScene as a scene manager output format, whereas the Ogre .xml, .mesh, .materials, .skeleton are entity formats, in preparation for a scene manager software.

Update:
Yes you are correct, DeleD doesn't have a 3DS exporter, I was referring to a work-flow from Blender into DeleD Smile Sorry for the confusion.

Not sure if you are interested, but in my experience, one of the better scene managers for Ogre formats is, Ogitor http://www.ogitor.org/HomePage albeit whilst it handles dotscene to a degree, it breaks away from the Ogre version a bit. It currently cannot export directly into a host platform like html or a supplied client, you need to do that yourself. Its primary function is to develop the scene components already created and add terrains, paged geometry, atmospherics etc before exporting.
