If you are seriously looking to create the replacement for the greatest immersive 3D build program produced to date, then you really need to go beyond Adobe Atmosphere in ease of use and functionality. I know that DeleD has a long way to go, but I can see that it has the potential to be the next generation 3D builder. If you can achieve this goal in the near future, then you have a product that many will be keen to purchase.
All you have to do is develop your program and make sure that it will export to Ogre mesh format so that the 3DBA player can view the environment on the web. Look at milkshape for some examples of material scripts. This would be good in DeleD. Also some lighting capabilities. Maybe Clive can work with you to create a scene file that can be viewed in the 3DBA player? We are at the threshold in a new era for the web and I understand that many obsticles need to be overcome. If we all work together, we can create the greatest web experience ever.
Personally, I feel that DeleD is Atmosphere in it's development stage. I hope you can develop it to go beyond Atmosphere.
Kind regards Brian |

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the input!
About exporting to Ogre mesh format, the exporter plugin will be released somewhere this Easter. All the basics work, I am just putting some last icing on the cake (options). Once we have that behind us (release, user feedback from the ogre community, etc), we can start to think about where to go next. Direct export to Clive's scene format would be an option, although I don't think DeleD will become a 3DBA dedicated scene compisition tool. But we'll discuss things with Clive once we get there.
I am not too sure what you mean with "look at milkshape for some examples of material scripts"? The mesh exporter exports materials (including lightmaps) just fine, what does Milkshape offer beyond that that you would like to see implemented in DeleD as well?
Also, about 'lighting capabilities', we know DeleD lighting still needs a lot of additional things implemented, but what capabilities in specific are you missing?
Thanks for the kind words, and your feedback is very(!) much appreciated! |

Hello Paul-Jan. It is good to get such positive information. I have spent a lot of time working through DeleD since my last post and have discovered many things. My apoligies regarding the lighting, Having played with it found it to be quite good. With regards to Milkshape, my comment was in refference to its ability to export the material file where it can be viewed and edited in the Ogre Mesh Viewer. Because we cannot yet get your files in there, dont know if your .mesh exports will do the same. Probably thinking out aloud here. Of course, a scene export to 3DBA would solve that issue.
I am looking forward to be able to export to the .mesh format. I have to say, that DeleD is the closest I have come to anything resembling Atmosphere and in some respects DeleD has better points. I encourage you to continue the development, you really do not have that far to go.
As I play more with DeleD, I will post some suggestions that I feel, as a designer, would be good to have in the program. Hope this is OK with you guys. Most of the suggestions you have probably already thought of, but it does not hurt to voice them.
Kind regards Brian |

The more suggestions the better you will probebly come up with things that we have not thought of

Your suggestions are more than welcome! DeleD thrives on community feedback (especially well-informed input like the things you posted before), so any ideas and/or criticism you may have is very much appreciated.
Jeroen and I try to keep track of everything, and even those things we don't agree with (or think might not be viable for a long time to come) are written down, to be reviewed later. Priorities shift a lot, there is just so many things to do / implement (and we love it ).
(About the 'exporting the .material file where it can be viewed and edited in the Ogre Mesh Viewer': the exporter does just that. I am aiming to have it up somewhere today.) |
