The df2 modding community needs to be able to edit .3di files to change models of items in the game and still after many years there isn't one. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could check out the .3di file format and see if they can make a plugin to be able to view and edit them. So if anyone is interested please say so and I will upload some sample files. Thanks

Hi there gcatso, and welcome! But excuse my ignorance, but what is df2?

How big is this community? Got some forum we could check out? I've been at mapmakersheaven.com (i believe it was) already. If this community is big enough, we might just create a plugin or 2 to support it. Smile

Delta Force 2 I believe from a quick google. And here are the details for the 3Di format. The format doesn't look too complex at all, I may have a bash at it seeing as I have been looking for a plugin to make for DeleD Razz. It doesn't look like an easy format to export, seeing as it is quite specialised to it's use. Do you need an export plugin?

Hi, thanks for responding so quickly. At any given time there are probably 500 - 1000 players online in Delta Force 2, it's no BF2 or doom3 but still many play it. Some links are:
www.mapmakersheaven.com - df2 modding site, these folks would appreciate it a whole lot
http://mods.terranova-exp.com/forums/ - other novalogic games mod forums, i'd say about 50% of these people used to play df2 and some would love to make a df2 mod
www.dfbarracks.com - novalogic games site with many users
The thing we need to do is be able to import the 3di file, edit, then export as .3di (or just make new ones and skip importing, but import would be nice Very Happy ) so we can use it in the game. Lots of people like the gameplay of df2 better than their newer games (such as Delta force: blackhawk down, Joint Operations, Delta force: reloaded) but have moved on because of the lack of mods and that is because its impossible to edit the item models thus far. I'd be willing to bet that some of those people would come back if they saw some real mods that have new items.
some 3di samples: http://home.ripway.com/2005-7/342913/3di_samples.zip

Sure sounds interesting. Smile Do you have more sites that describe the format? Preferably with some example code.

I'm afraid not. And, sadly, I don't think http://www.artwork.com/package/apd3d/3Di_2.htm is the same thing because that page says that format is for companies that work with integrated circuits but, I'm not sure.

Is it even possible if you don't have the file structure? Because I'm not sure Novalogic ever told anyone.

Seems a lot of people use the 3di extension for a lot of things. Why not ask the DeltaForce developpers for the file spec.

I looked on Wotsit.org, didn't see anything.

Someone has the spec, because there are old forum posts talking about people making loaders that allow you to view the mesh and textures. (google 3di spec novalogic)

Quote:

Ever since DeltaForce1 was released I was hoping that NovaLogic would release and editor for the 3Di file (the file containing textures and 3D Mesh data for polygon based objects in DF1/DF2). However realizing how bad (non-existence) NovaLogic's support for 3rd party modifications for their games is, I hoped somebody (not me) would make a program that would allow the editing of those polygon based objects. Well I stopped hopping for that now too. Instead I made my own, even though I am not very good when it comes to 3D stuff. But the program I made (3DiView Beta v0.7) does allow you right now to Export/Import/View textures inside the 3Di files and it allows you to Export/View the 3D Mesh (the import function will soon follow).

For example you can use it to make your own Skins for any DF1/DF2 object.

Anyway, I realize that instead of whining I should have made this program a long time ago.

Here is the download link: http://www.df2hq.com/fworaven/3DiView.zip

People have asked the developers before and never get any help. Novalogic is very secretive about the format for some reason.

About that 3DiViewer. The maker of that has stopped development on that some years ago unfortunately but that tool would allow you to view textures and it would show you some dots that formed the model but you couldnt edit the model, only the textures.

Those dots didn't come out of nowhere, whatever that guy could tell us would be a good start. Those dots were the vertices, a 3d model is made out of vertices.

Does the program have any documentation? There is talk on this page of a 3di processor

www.jointopscentral.com and the date of the mentioning isn't that long ago. Ask on their forums if anyone has any info.

Lol, I missed the bit about it being for ICs Razz, I thought it sounded a bit limiting for a 3D model format.

Surprised Well, I can help and I can't.

Some guy named Chester PMed me all the details of a 3di loader. And I'm not allowed to post it here, because he thinks you guys will use it for evil. Confused Which begs the question of why it was even sent to me to begin with.

Sad I never signed up to code the thing, I'm just good at helping track things down.

Ain't that a bitch?

Laughing

What to do... what to do... It's funny how in some games, the guys who write the loaders release them, and the modding community flourishes into something great, adn then you have gys in some games who want to keep it all to themselves, because other people "will use it for evil".
