Selecting is done by using one of the following methods:

1. Hold down SHIFT and click on items using leftmouse button (LMB) on 2D views
2. Select multiple items by holding down CTRL+SHIFT and use LMB
3. Hold down SHIFT and drag a rectangle around items
4. Select objects in the Scene Inspector

Note that this works on all items (vertices, edges, polygons, faces, objects) with the exeption of method 4.
