A few weks ago, after designing a clean-cut world in DeleD Lite, I proceeded to light the scene and save the file afterward. Switching back to the wireframe view, I was shocked to discover that all the objects I'd carefully made now had lines drawn across them, usually diagonally from corner to corner. It got really weird on cylinders, and made it almost impossible to recognize what was what in the wireframe view.

Is this behavior to be expected of 3D design in general, or is this unique to DeleD? Is it a problem with DeleD, or do I have some option set to on that shouldn't be?

This is because has to triangulated all your objects to lightmap them. You map is now 'ruined'. If you want to keep it how it was, you need to have saved a backup.

What I do is a "save as' to a new file. eg boat.dmf to boat_lit.dmf and light this new file. If I need to edit the geometry, I go back to the original file, and then make the edits, and save myself a new _lit file.

That's what I was afraid of. Is this a legitimate concern? Should I look forward to a time when DeleD won't do this, or is it to be expected from all 3D programs?

It's not really 'ruined'. It's just harder to edit. All 3d games and stuff works with triangles. But the editors usually export out a finished version of the file instead of 'ruining' the working copy!

I edited my above post with a way to get around it for now.

Yes, this should be solved in a future version. Putting it on the TODO list!
