Anything nVidia. I'm using an e-Geforce 6600, which isn't the latest and greatest, but it is a monsterous improvement from the 5200 that I was using on the old puter. Plus, it has 256mb of onboard ram. Talk about making games run fast and smooth.... _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Yeah, I'm thinking Geforce 6800GT PCI-E. Is that something I could do with for the next 3 years, you think? |

Frankly, I think you should go with ATI. Why? Because both my development machines are running on Geforce power, and we have no ATI testing machine ATM
Just kidding though. The 6800GT PCI-E seems like a nice card. Make sure you get one with dual monitor support, so we can finally get rid of those 'DeleD doesn't work right when positioned in between my two monitors' bugs that can be found lurking in the dark corners of the todo list |

The 6800 is a great card. i looked at it, but couldn't afford the price.
It should already have duel moniter and it is 256mb onboard ram.
Even my little 6600 has duel monitor ability. (but I have only 1 moniter)
Btw, it should last you at least 3 years, mabe more. _________________ Some day I will grow up and be a real modeler.

Jeroen,
Think new video card every year!
I am not going to guess on the PCI-E cards, still running with the old MSI/NVidea GF4400 AGP with 128 and it is still sufficent for everything I have thrown at it( given its sitting in a MSI MB designed for the card).
I would suggest buying "more" card than you think you will need at present. |

I might just go for the 7800GT but it's rather expensive. Anyone got some comments on that card? |

Reviews on it are great!
Expensive yes! I looked at the GTX first and the price of the GT didn't look as bad then Like the article said, wait a bit for the price to drop. |

I prefer not to pay over EUR 400 for a videocard. Mind you, my current pc (6600GT included) was cheaper than that
But seriously, why would you buy this card over a 6800? It's not exactly groundbreaking new technology right? Just some 4 extra pixel shader pipelines (16-20) and 50mhz of extra memory clock speed (350-400). That's ok for an extra EUR 50, but last time I checked the prices were quite a bit further apart than that.
Mind you, I am not exactly a hardware expert so I might just be missing out on the Cool Nifty Things about this card. Maybe the 6800GT was buggy and the 7800 runs at twice the FPS for any real world application, I really wouldn't know |

I got a 6800GT, 256MB, dual monitor connectors (I don't have dual monitors. hehehehe), and it's not even PCI-E, it's AGP and it's great! It's quiet, fast as hell and I think it will suit my needs for quite some time. Also, PJ is right, not too many differences in the tech part right now, but a huge difference in price.
and I also agree with Trucker2000 on that: "Insist on Nvidia", hehehehhe
Even my older cards: GeforceFX 5900 Ultra (256MB) and a Quadro4 750XGL(128 MB) still handle most of my3d work quite ok. Only the quadro has been left behind on latest DX9.0C stuff. The only thing that still hurts a bit is the price I paid for them new and seeing it drop as Nvidia released a newer version some months later! The eternal story in technology!!! Right now I've decided to stick to what I got for quite some time (Haven't even updated to 64 bits)for $$$$ reasons. It's too tough to afford a computer update every 6 months!!! Even every year! |

On the 64 bit part, do it ASAP. I run a Acer 1520 series laptop on a 64 bit AMD 3000, under 64 bit XP Pro and it screams on design apps. I dual boot and the 32 bit XP Pro seems faster than a normal 32 bit system. S3 64meg shared memory video chip came OEM but I don't game off the laptop so no big issue there. I detest laptops and use this one for "covert" stuff when I am at work.
32 bit DeleD speeds up nicely under 64 bit XP BTW with no new problems.
Dual core AMD 64/64 bit XP Pro on the next gaming /design system I build. |

Speaking of video card (and DeleD) ...
I've recently bought a brand new laptop :
AMD Turion 64 / 1,6 Ghz / 512 Mo RAM / XP home SP2
>>> ATI Radeon xpress 200M 128 Mo shared memory
and DeleD is so sloooooooowwww that I just can't use it
I've installed all my other 3D app (Blitz3D, AC3D, Fragmotion) and they all work fine ...
As far as I know, DeleD and AC3D use OpenGL ; AC3D works perfectly but not DeleD ...
I've tried to switch all the opengl card parameters to "performance" and not "quality", but that doesn't help at all.
Any hint (except buying another laptop ) ?

Replace the shared memory with a laptop video card sporting a Nivida chip, thats the plan for mine.
Edit: And double/triple check to make sure you are using the latest driver for your chipset. |

Mappy,
That's bad news! I wish we could give you some hints, but I really don't have a clue. Did you try changing your desktop resolution and colordepth? Perhaps DeleD is ending up with some non-accelerated (read: windows emulated) screen mode, which would explain the extreme slowness. Also, make sure (and then again) that no other application is running whatsoever (screensavers, communication software, trayicon tools) to eliminate the possibility of software conflicts.
If no solution comes up, and you feel up to it, please contact me directly (paul [at] delgine {dot} com). Perhaps I can send you some test-application (or perhaps a special DeleD version with a whole lot of debugging info included) to get to the bottom of this! |
